The cathedral congregation of St. John the Evangelist was formed in 1929 by the merger of the congregation of All Saints' Cathedral and of the St. Peter's and St. James' mission congregations. Ground breaking for the Cathedral was held in 1925, and construction of the gothic edifice continued at irregular intervals until 1954, when the transepts and crossing tower were completed.
